Welcome to Tiba Espresso.

Adelaide's newest independent café on Flinders Street

There’s a new café on Flinders Street, and it comes with a story worth telling. Tiba Espresso opened its doors 19 months ago in the heart of Adelaide CBD, and since then it has quietly become one of the city’s most loved independent cafés, with over 98 five-star Google reviews and a reputation for specialty coffee and food that punches well above its weight.

The name behind the café

Ask Niel where the name Tiba comes from and his face lights up. Tiba is taken from Curitiba — the vibrant city in southern Brazil where Niel grew up. It’s a small detail that carries a lot of meaning. The name is a daily reminder of home, of roots, and of the warmth and kindness that Brazilian culture is known for.

In fact, “Tiba” means kindness in the context of the café’s philosophy — and that intention runs through everything, from the way the coffee is made to the way every customer is greeted at the door.

From Curitiba to Adelaide. Niel's journey

Niel arrived in Australia in 2016, drawn by adventure and the promise of a new chapter. Adelaide quickly became home. He made it permanent in 2018, settling in the CBD with his partner Ben and immersing himself in the city’s hospitality scene.

His career began behind the espresso machine — learning the craft of specialty coffee as a barista. But Niel’s ambitions extended beyond the coffee machine. He completed a full chef’s qualification and spent years working in kitchens across Adelaide’s café scene, developing a cooking style that is simple, intentional and deeply flavourful.

After years of working for others and quietly building a vision of his own, Niel took the leap and opened Tiba Espresso on Flinders Street. The CBD was a natural choice — it was already his neighbourhood. He wanted to create something for the people who live and work there every day.

What makes Tiba different

Walk into Tiba and you notice it immediately — this is not a formula café. Everything on the menu has been thought about. The coffee is specialty grade, sourced from 1645 Coffee Roasters and prepared with the precision of someone who spent years mastering the craft before ever thinking about owning a café.

The food carries the same care. Niel brings a chef’s training and a Brazilian love of bold, honest flavours to every dish — from the Chilli Scrambled Eggs infused with fermented chilli oil to the Corn Fritters with house-made pumpkin purée. The menu is seasonal, fresh and made from scratch every single day.

But perhaps more than anything else, Tiba is defined by its atmosphere. It is a place where people linger. Where regulars are known by name. Where a solo visitor with a laptop feels just as welcome as a group of friends catching up over brunch. That was always the vision — a neighbourhood café with real soul, right in the heart of the city.

A space that gives back to the community

Beyond the coffee and food, Tiba has quietly become something else — a home for local art. Each month Niel opens the café’s walls to a local Adelaide artist, inviting them to exhibit their original works in the space. It’s a rotating gallery that changes every month, giving emerging and established artists alike a place to share their work with the community — and giving café visitors a reason to keep coming back.

It’s art you can discover over a flat white. And it’s free to visit, every single day.
